Wine Country to the Rescue Honors Linda Collister with Lifetime Achievement Award

Updated: Dec 7

At the 2022 Wine Country to the Rescue event, we had the privilege of honoring a true pioneer in fire prevention and community safety. Healdsburg Fire Marshal-Division Chief Linda Collister, a champion of preparedness and resilience, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her remarkable career and lasting contributions to Northern Sonoma County.

Linda, who retired in May 2022 after 15 years of service with the Healdsburg Fire Department, exemplifies what it means to dedicate a lifetime to public safety. Her passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to protecting her community make her a deserving recipient of this prestigious honor.

A Career Defined by Service

Linda joined the Healdsburg Fire Department as Fire Marshal-Division Chief in August 2007. Over the next 15 years, she transformed fire prevention efforts in Healdsburg and surrounding areas. As one of Sonoma County’s first female Fire Marshal-Division Chiefs, Linda broke barriers while delivering results that have improved safety for countless residents.

Her many accomplishments include:

  • Unifying the Sonoma County Fire Code: This effort created consistency in fire safety regulations across the county, benefiting businesses and residents alike.

  • Advancing Fire Prevention Infrastructure: Linda advocated for and implemented sprinkler systems in schools, businesses, and affordable housing units.

  • Weed Abatement Program: She fine-tuned the city’s annual weed abatement process, significantly reducing wildfire risks.

  • Hazardous Materials Oversight: Linda led the city’s hazardous materials program, ensuring safety during incidents involving toxic substances.

  • Emergency Leadership: As Division Chief, Linda played a critical role in major wildfire incidents, including the Kincade and Walbridge Fires, coordinating responses and providing on-the-ground support.

Strengthening the Community with COPE

One of Linda’s most enduring legacies is her work with COPE (Citizens Organized to Prepare for Emergencies) groups. She served as a vital link between COPE leaders and the fire department, fostering collaboration that has enhanced neighborhood preparedness.

Linda helped organize fuels management projects, home hardening efforts, and fire road maintenance. During the Walbridge Fire in 2020, her coordination with COPE groups ensured that residents received timely information, were prepared for evacuation, and remained safe throughout the crisis.

“Linda has been the kingpin in keeping our COPE groups connected to fire department activities and emergency response,” said Healdsburg Fire Chief Jason Boaz. “Her relationships with these groups are one of her crowning achievements.”

A Fitting Tribute at Wine Country to the Rescue

The 2022 Wine Country to the Rescue event was the perfect setting to honor Linda’s extraordinary career. The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrated her contributions, from leading wildfire prevention initiatives to personally assisting with evacuations during emergencies.

“Linda’s dedication to fire safety and her love for this community are unparalleled,” said Chief Boaz. “She has been my number two in command for seven years, and I couldn’t have asked for a more hardworking, passionate person to serve alongside.”

Celebrating a Legacy

As Linda transitions into retirement, her influence remains woven into the fabric of Northern Sonoma County. Her leadership, innovation, and commitment to public safety have made the region safer and stronger.

Wine Country to the Rescue is proud to recognize Linda Collister with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her incredible career and dedication to our community.
