At Wine Country to the Rescue, we’re not just about a fantastic evening of camaraderie and support — we’re about making a tangible difference. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our attendees, sponsors, and donors, we’ve been able to fund critical tools that directly impact the safety of our community. One of those tools is the pre-attack maps used by the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District, which have become invaluable during wildfire emergencies like the Point Fire.
What Are Pre-Attack Maps?
Pre-attack maps are a powerful resource designed to give first responders a strategic advantage during wildfire incidents. These maps provide detailed, actionable information, including:
Locations of houses and whether they have water sources.
Roads and fire roads to improve navigation.
Proposed dozer lines and breaks.
Areas where wildfires can potentially be stopped or slowed.
While these maps contain vital data, they do not include any confidential information, ensuring accessibility for assisting agencies while maintaining privacy.
Proven Value in Real-Life Emergencies
These maps were first developed by the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District to address the unique challenges of our region’s terrain and wildland-urban interface. They proved their worth during major incidents, including the 2019 Kincade Fire and the 2020 Lightning Complex Fires, earning high praise from assisting agencies who now actively seek them out.
During the recent Point Fire, these maps once again played a crucial role. Fire crews utilized them to swiftly identify safe access points, water sources, and locations where tactical actions could slow or stop the fire’s progression. This strategic planning undoubtedly contributed to protecting lives, homes, and infrastructure.
How Your Support Makes a Difference
Without the funds raised by Wine Country to the Rescue, the development and printing of these maps wouldn’t be possible. Your generosity ensures that our firefighters have the tools they need to combat wildfires efficiently and effectively. The success of the pre-attack maps is just one example of how your contributions directly enhance the safety and resilience of our community.
Looking Ahead
As we face longer and more intense wildfire seasons, resources like pre-attack maps will continue to be indispensable. With your ongoing support, we can ensure that our first responders are equipped with the best tools and information, empowering them to protect what we all hold dear — our homes, our families, and the beautiful wine country we call home.
Thank you for being part of the solution. Together, we’re making a real difference.
Join us at the next Wine Country to the Rescue fundraiser and see how your support can continue to save lives and strengthen our community.
