HeloPod® Proves Its Worth in Pine Mountain Fire Response

Updated: Dec 8

On November 24, 2022, the value of the HeloPod®, funded by Wine Country to the Rescue, was put into action when Northern Sonoma County Fire and CAL FIRE responded to a vegetation fire on Pine Mountain Road. The blaze, located in challenging terrain, required rapid intervention to prevent further spread. Thanks to the strategically placed HeloPod® in the Geysers, CAL FIRE’s Helicopter C104 from the Boggs Mountain Helitack Base was able to refill en route to the fire, saving valuable time and making a critical difference in the firefighting efforts.

The Role of the HeloPod® in Wildfire Response

The HeloPod®, acquired on August 22, 2022, is a high-capacity, pre-positioned helicopter dip source designed to enhance firefighting efficiency. Its strategic placement in the Geysers—a region known for its fire-prone vegetation and remote access—has proven invaluable in supporting aerial firefighting operations.

On the day of the Pine Mountain Road fire, Helicopter C104, a CAL FIRE aircraft specializing in rapid initial attack, was able to utilize the HeloPod® for quick water refills. Instead of making the lengthy trip to a natural water source, the helicopter could refill directly from the HeloPod® and return to the fire line faster, increasing the number of water drops per hour and bolstering containment efforts.

The Power of CAL FIRE’s Firehawks

CAL FIRE’s fleet of Firehawk helicopters exemplifies the next generation of aerial firefighting. Originally designed for military use, these aircraft have been adapted for wildfire suppression, featuring large water tanks and powerful engines that allow them to perform multiple rapid water drops. When paired with resources like the HeloPod®, Firehawks become even more effective, significantly enhancing their ability to protect lives and property during wildfires.

The Importance of Community Support

The deployment of the HeloPod® and its success during the Pine Mountain Road fire underscores the importance of community-backed initiatives like Wine Country to the Rescue. This innovative tool was made possible through the generosity of our attendees, sponsors, and donors. By funding critical equipment like the HeloPod®, we ensure that our firefighters have the resources they need to respond quickly and effectively to wildfires.

The use of the HeloPod® during this fire exemplifies its role as a force multiplier, enabling aerial and ground crews to work more efficiently. The time saved during water refills allowed crews to focus on containing the fire, reducing its impact and protecting nearby communities.

Building a Safer Northern Sonoma County

The success of the HeloPod® during the Pine Mountain Road fire highlights the significance of investing in advanced firefighting resources. Thanks to the support of Wine Country to the Rescue, Northern Sonoma County Firefighters and CAL FIRE now have a critical tool that enhances their ability to protect lives, property, and the environment.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort. Together, we are making a real difference in wildfire response and prevention. Join us at the next Wine Country to the Rescue event to continue supporting life-saving initiatives that keep our community safe.
